INFORMATION ABOUT VIDEO PRESENTATION

In the announcement of June 10, presenters were notified that ISEA 2020 will now be 100% digital.

Online academic presentations will be streamed over four days – October 13 to 16 – from 7:00 am to 19:00 (Montreal time : GMT-4) in order to cover the most time zones and accommodate the largest number of international delegates.

Presentations – except keynotes – will be pre-recorded and streamed, however, discussions following the presentations will be live. Like in-person panel sessions, the presentation videos will be grouped thematically. For the live Q&A and discussion time, authors will be online along with mediators and participants, to exchange and answer questions in real-time. Each session will last up to 90 minutes.

Presentations must therefore be pre-recorded and sent in by August 17, 2020, via WeTransfer, to [email protected]

– Full paper presentation videos can be up to 15 minutes long.
– Short paper presentation videos, artist talks and institutional presentation videos can be up to 10 minutes long.

There are many tools that can be used to record your video. Here are some recommendations

Tips for a creative and effective scholarly paper presentation in video format.

As we take the symposium virtually, we want to make sure we are engaging our audience as much as possible, so we have put together a few tips that will help make sure we deliver a great session.

  • It helps to maintain the clear structure of your paper as much as possible with an introduction, methodology and/or argument, and evidence of the conclusions. Pre-structure your 15 or 10 minute video, by allotting a section to each part.
  • While it is a great idea to introduce the person delivering the presentation, we recommend inserting as many visual aids as possible to illustrate what is being explained. These can be photos, parts of other videos, graphics, or slides containing text.
  • Do not forget to insert references and credits to ALL MEDIA that you use, ideally on the screen when they appear (as opposed to at the end of your video).
  • If you insert slides with text as in any Powerpoint-style presentation, avoid dense paragraphs of text. Privilege short sentences with key ideas in clear, large font. Make sure you allow enough time to read the text.
  • Avoid exploring the fancy effects and transitions between slides offered in your video editing software.
  • Although 15 or 10 minutes is not a long time, try to allow pauses in your speech.

Tips for the quality of the image and sound when recording yourself speaking:

  • Location: Pick a background that is clean and tidy. Empty rooms will create an echo. Rooms with carpets and some furniture are best. Objects, plants and pictures often create a positive environment. Pick a quiet room. Make sure your phone notifications are turned to silent during talks/panels / Q&A, as beeping noises in the background are extremely distracting.
  • Camera Placement: The camera should be at eye level, and your eyes should be about two thirds of the way to the top of the frame (i.e. put a box or stack books under your computer until it’s at that level). Stand about an arm’s length away from the computer. Avoid moving back and forth. Look at the camera as much as possible, not down at the screen. Although this feels unnatural to you, it will feel natural to the audience.
  • Lighting: You can use natural light coming through a window, or a lamp. The light source should be directly in front of you, not off to the side, overhead, or under your face. The main light source should not be behind you, as this will create a silhouette.

There are many resources and tutorials with tips to help with the quality of image and sound in videos and online presentations. We have found a few online tutorials that, in spite of their different topics and purposes, contain useful tips.

Cybersecurity, archives and access to documentation
The technology used for ISEA2020 Online is currently being developed, with the presentation and networking tools being integrated. We will present it at a later stage, specifying all the security measures put in place to ensure safe and exclusive access to the platform and everything it will contain.

Video documentation of panel sessions will remain available on the platform to delegates of ISEA2020 exclusively for 6 months following the symposium (until mid-april 2021). Following, this period, video presentations will be archived by ISEA.

POSTER

Accepted poster presenters will login to a “virtual space” on the ISEA2020 Online platform, where they will upload media about their research.

This virtual space will only be accessible to registered presenters 2 weeks before October 13th, but presenters will be invited to an onboarding session beforehand (a virtual guided tour, at the end of August, date tbd).

The virtual space will be available for the entire duration of the academic symposium (October 13 to 16). Visitors will be able to access this virtual space, communicate with authors and request meetings to discuss their work during this time.

Authors may begin preparing the media for their space.

– AN IMAGE as a header to the virtual space: Image size 1200x675px (16:9 format) not exceeding 1Mo.
– A SHORT VIDEO (3 min max), which must be imported first onto a private channel on Youtube or Vimeo, to then use the url to integrate it into the platform.
– A SHORT TEXT DESCRIPTION of 400-500 characters.
– A PDF document. ATTENTION: this can be a pdf of the poster. DO NOT publish the camera-ready paper in the virtual space.
– Authors will also be able to add links to their website or social media.
