Montreal, August 14, 2020 – ISEA2020 [26th International Symposium on Electronic Art] will be, from October 13 to 18, 2020.

The ISEA2020 artistic programme explores the infinitely large and the infinitely small worlds of Sentience — feeling-sensing-making sense.

Selected artists engage different phenomena, species and senses: amongst 60 artworks, a sculpture of transgender hormones carried into space (Adriana Knouf); an installation based on our collective imagination about the shape and taste of clouds (Sue Huang); a soft robotic sculpture of a cyborg oyster (Stephanie Rothenberg); an interactive performance between an artificial intelligence system and the microbes in a human’s mouth (Klaus Spiess & Lucie Strecker); and sound-based interactive installations based on the ‘hearing’ and ‘listening’ capabilities of nonhuman entities (Suzanne Kite and Devin Ronneberg), and on the world of non-hearing subjects (Hugo Solís García). The artists’ transdisciplinary investigations share a sense of urgency to rethink the relationships between sentient beings in times, spaces, and scales beyond human.

For the first time in the history of the symposium, ISEA2020 Online Montreal will be taking on the challenge of presenting in digital format artworks that were meant to be experienced in a physical venue. Each artwork will be presented on both the ISEA2020 Online platform and on a dedicated website. While we are aware that our proposed online solutions do not replace the real, embodied experience of media art, we hope the artistic programme can, in this way, enter a dialogue with the academic programme of the symposium.

While we do not encourage delegates to travel to Montreal specifically for ISEA2020, with the recent local developments in regards to some social distancing and congregation restrictions being lifted, we have decided to resume collaborations with partner organizations in Montreal. As such, a small number of artworks by local artists will be exhibited at Maison de la culture Claude-Léveillée and Maison de la culture Janine Sutto, and a programme of interventions by local artists and MAPP_MTL will be presented in public spaces. This will also be documented in the ISEA2020 Online platform and the website dedicated to the artistic programme.

Montréal, le 14 août 2020 — ISEA2020 [26ème Symposium International sur l’Art Électronique] sera, du 13 au 18 octobre 2020, le pavillon Créativité de MTL connecte : La Semaine numérique de Montréal.

La programmation artistique d’ISEA2020 explore les infiniment grands et infiniment petits mondes de la Sentience — pressentir-sentir-faire/donner sens.

Les artistes sélectionnés s’intéressent à différents phénomènes, espèces et façons de ressentir : parmi les 60 œuvres d’art, une sculpture d’hormones transgenres transportées dans l’espace (Adriana Knouf) ; une installation basée sur notre imaginaire collectif autour des formes et du goût des nuages (Sue Huang) ; une sculpture robotique molle en forme d’huître (Stephanie Rothenberg) ; une performance interactive entre un système d’intelligence artificielle et les microbes de la bouche d’un humain (Klaus Spiess & Lucie Strecker) ; des installations basées sur le son explorant les capacités auditives et d’écoute de créatures non humaines (Suzanne Kite et Devin Ronneberg), ainsi que le monde de sujets non entendants (Hugo Solís García). Les explorations transdisciplinaires des artistes se retrouvent dans un sentiment d’urgence à repenser les relations entre les êtres sensibles selon des temporalités, des espaces et des échelles au-delà de l’humain.

Pour la première fois dans l’histoire du symposium, ISEA2020 En ligne de Montréal relèvera le défi de présenter en format numérique des œuvres d’art qui initialement prévues pour des lieux physiques. Chaque œuvre sera présentée à la fois sur la plate-forme ISEA2020 En ligne, et sur un site web dédié. Bien que nous soyons conscients que les solutions en ligne adoptées ne remplacent pas l’expérience d’oeuvres d’art médiatiques en présentiel, nous espérons, de cette manière, établir un dialogue entre les programmes artistique et académique du symposium.

Nous n’encourageons pas les délégués à se rendre à Montréal spécifiquement pour ISEA2020. Cependant, compte tenu de l’évolution récente au niveau régional ayant permis la levée de certaines mesures de distanciation sociale physique, nous avons repris les collaborations avec des organismes partenaires montréalais. Ainsi, un petit nombre d’œuvres d’artistes locaux seront exposées à la Maison de la culture Claude-Léveillée et à la Maison de la culture Janine Sutto, et des interventions seront présentées dans les espaces publics en partenariat avec MAPP_MTL. Ces oeuvres seront également documentées dans la plateforme d’ISEA2020 En ligne et dans le site web dédié au programme artistique.
